in april 1942, japanese army pilots conducted night flight training in rabaul. at this time, japan was at the crossroads of the pacific war. isoroku yamamoto, rear admiral ugaki, and rear admiral kato are all looking for answers to the future of night battles. they each took different actions and left different marks on the battlefield.

commander yamamoto, a sea warrior who has experienced many storms, has a deep friendship with me. he regarded night fighting as a strategic goal and personally went to rabaul to encourage pilots to actively train. his voice is inspiration and courage. however, he was also a heavy victim. when he went to bouin to express condolences to the air force, he encountered a formation of enemy aircraft and was eventually killed.

my fate is closely linked to that of commander yamamoto. we are in the same boat with each other and support each other even in the face of life and death. his death in battle gave me a heavy impact and made me deeply understand the cruelty and ruthlessness of war.

however, war is not only a tragedy, it is also a symbol of hope. since the russo-japanese war, people have believed that night battles win with less, and that ground forces operate at night, but aviation forces have hardly done so. it was not until i arrived in rabaul that i began to see the dawn of night battles. what i saw was commander yamamoto’s persistence and pursuit of night fighting.

his meditations and my experiences intertwined to form a special resonance. he proved the importance of night fighting with his actions, while i worked hard to learn and practice during the war.

this journey gave me a deeper understanding of the cruelty of war. it also made me more clearly aware of humanity in the flames of war, as well as the tenacity and unyieldingness of the human will.
